1. Quality comes before quantity
Practice with intension. Every practice session should have a purpose:
- Decide one focus before starting (rhythm, finger numbers, sound quality), instead of playing the whole piece repeatedly.
2. Use a structured practice method
Follow a simple, repeatable structure so children know how to practice.
- Identify the problem spot (wrong notes, uneven rhythm)
- Practice a small section only (2 – 4 bars)
- Repeat with a clear focus
- Play the whole piece once to apply the improvement
3. Break the music into small sections
Small successes build confidence faster than struggling through the entire piece.
- Practice one line or phrase until secure, then connect it to the next section.
4. For young children: count repetitions, not minutes
Use practice rounds rather than time targets.
For one short section:
- 4 rounds if comfortable
- 5 – 6 rounds if still learning
- Each rounds has one clear focus (notes -> rhythm -> hands together).
5. Short, guided practice beats long, unfocused sessions
End practice while the child is still attentive.
- 10 – 15 minutes of focused practice is more effective than 30 – 40 minutes of unconscious practice
6. Consistency builds resilience
Regular practice builds habits better than occasional long sessions.
- A short routine 4 – 6 days a week builds perseverance and responsibility without pressure
- Keep a regular practice time
7. Parents’ role: support, not pressure
Parents guide the routine and celebrate effort, not perfection
- Help to include piano practice into the child’s daily schedule
- Use encouragement, stickers, or small rewards
- Avoid punishment or comparison
